Google permanently loses customer data !

Google permanently loses customer data !

Just last month, in August 2015, a Google data centre in Belgium was hit by four successive lightening strikes causing some servers to fail and permanantly lose customer data.

Google has said it is 'only' 0.000001% of data that is lost, but even 0.000001% of the amount of data stored by Google, is still an enormous amount of data. Certainly this will be no consolation to those customers who have actually lost their data.

This is not the first time Google have permanently lost customer data - about 5 years ago, there was an incident of data loss caused by software upgrades on their servers. This situation is not peculiar to Google alone. Anyone who relies on disk to disk backup only is at risk.

Because Google 'backup' data by copying/replicating it from server to server and do not appear to take offsite media (Tape) backups of their data, all customers data is always live, always on. This makes it susceptible to loss in disaster situations like this, or any other case, such as virus infection, where disk based data can be accessed.

Tape backup, had it been taken would have allowed a clean copy of the data to be restored back to a new server once the older ones failed, thus the data would have been preserved.

If you cannot afford to lose your data - backup to Tape regularly and store it offsite. Only then will you have total security of your data.

If you would like to know how to impliment a robust backup schedule in your business, whether to tape or other media, we are happy to meet for a no obligation discussion about your requirements.
